Drill Writer
A Drill Writer is someone who writes or creates marching band drill. This person has an understanding
of musical phrasing and presentation. This person can produce this by hand or using a professional piece
of software that will produce these same images that was only originally done by hand.
A Drill writer can produce a single page of drill. This produced on drill paper that has metrics that divide
the space into sections that can be easily communicated. These metrics are there to tell the marching band
performer where in relationship to the yard lines they stand. The metric size to communicate
specifc measurement is an eight to five marching step. There are eight equal sized steps for a distance of five yards.
A drill writer can take 30 minutes to produce a single page of drill in 15 minutes for a 200 piece
marching band by hand. Drill designs for marching band are made with an average of 50 to 100 sets of drill.
A single page of drill can cost upwards of $50 per page. Drill writers are known for using mathematical instruments such as compasses protractors. These tools help create exact measurements and nice clean shapes.
He responsible for knowing each sections of the marching band ensemble. Knowing the restrictions and capabilities
of these sections ability to contribute to the overall design is fundamental knowledge. Knowing the
skill sets and making them shine is the talent of the drill writer. These sections include the horns,
color guard and the drum line.
In order for the drill writer to prepare a proper arrangement for any band program. Materials
such and score of music, instrumentation of program, and estimated time line of when and how
the deliverables will be taught will aid any drill writer to produce a quality product.
A Drill writer denotes the person that has written or produced the written communication of the show.
A Drill writer is also the marching band show designer in some cases.
